Pilgrimage Overview

Join us on a pilgrimage to visit some of the greatest sights of France, Spain, and Portugal.

Itinerary

*9 Days are spent in The Holy Land & 5 days are spent in Egypt (excluding travel time)

DAY 1
Departure

Today we board our flights to Toulouse with beverages and meals served aloft.

DAY 2
Arrival

Upon Arrival in Toulouse after going through customs and picking up our baggage we will be greeted by our Holy Land Travel Center Representative who will accompany us to our hotel in Lourdes for check in. Time permitting, we will join the candlelight procession and return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3
Lourdes

This day we start with mass at the Grotto of Massabielle, where our Lady appeared to Bernadette in 1858. Later we take our official group photo in front of the Basilica, followed by our guided tour of Lourdes: The sanctuary of the Basilica of St. Pius X, the world’s largest underground church. The Basilica, The Baths, where thousands of miraculous cures have taken place is the most respected shrine and sanctuary in France. In the afternoon our group will join the Blessed Sacrament Procession and Blessing of the sick, (if available on that day).

DAY 4
Lourdes

Today is dedicated to religious activities in Lourdes on your own.

DAY 5
Lourdes, Loyola, Santander

This morning we depart Lourdes and drive through the Pyrenees Mountains of Loyola, the hometown of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits. Here you will visit the Basilica and the tower house where he was born and lived. We continue to Santander for dinner and overnight.

DAY 6
Raibadeo, Santiago De Compostela

Depart Santander this morning and drive to Ribadeo, Ribadeo’s old town includes the interesting architecture that earned the town a place on Spain’s list of cultural heritage sites in 2004. Some remarkable buildings are Aduana Vella (18th c.), the Castillo de San Damián (18th c.), O Cargadoiro (20th c.) and the Plaza de España, the heart of town where the town hall, formerly a neoclassical palace that belonged to Ibáñez, and the Torre dos Morenos are located. The latter is not in a proper condition though you can still admire its past grandeur. The sober but well-preserved convent of Santa Clara and the parish church of Santa María del Campo (which used to be an old Franciscan convent in the 13th century) complete the list of attractions you cannot miss. We will celebrate mass in Ribadeo before continuing to Santiago de Compostela for dinner and overnight.

DAY 7
Santiago De Compostela

This morning we begin our visit of Santiago de Compostela, one of the most famous shrines in the world, where the tomb of St. James (brother of St. John the Divine) was discovered. St. James was given the task of spreading Christianity in the distant Hispanic lands and is known as the first pilgrim. Since the discovery of the tomb, numerous miracles have taken place here and every year thousands of faithful gather on July 25 to celebrate the Feast Day. We begin with a visit to the Cathedral of St. James and attend one of the public masses. The Cathedral is one of the finest examples of architecture in all of Europe. As pilgrims, we have the opportunity to climb the stairs behind the high altar to visit the crypt where the relics of St. James are preserved, touch the central pillar (Portico de La Gloria), view the ‘botafumeiro’ and admire the wealth of medieval art inside the Cathedral, before visiting the cloister museum. Enjoy a stroll on own, though the beautiful streets of Santiago de Compostela, the city of the apostle, full of historical buildings and others. Dinner and overnight in Santiago de Compostela. ~Optional Morning Walking Tour ~ This morning we set out to join the walking pilgrims at the Monte del Gozo from which the spires of the Cathedral are first visible. We will walk the last couple of miles of El Camino arriving at the Cathedral of St. James, the destination we have been yearning to reach. We will enter through the Holy Door which is only opened during the Holy Year of St. James. Continue to the Cloister Museum with our group.

DAY 8
Santiago De Compostela, Ourense, Trasmiras, Fatima

Today we depart Santiago de Compostela and head to Fatima. Along the way we stop in Ourense, the Capital of the Province. Here we will stop to see St. Martin’s Cathedral with an ancient crucific of great devotion for the people in the area, a bridge built by the Roman empire, and the burgas (boiling spring of mineral water used by locals for thousands of years). After our short stop we will head towards the small town of Trasmiras where we will have Mass in an ancient church dedicated to St. John the Baptist before continuing to Fatima for dinner and overnight.

DAY 9
Fatima

This morning we visit Fatima, where Our Blessed Mother visited three shepherd children, Lucia Santos and her cousins Bl. Jacinta & Bl. Francisco Marto in 1917. We participate in the Rosary & Candlelight Procession.

DAY 10
Fatima, Tomar

Today we take an excursion to Tomar with a visit to the Monastery-Fortress of the Knights Templar. We will stop in the town of Santarem for Mass at St. Stephens Church, and to venerate the 13th century Eucharistic Miracle. This evening, we depart to Lisbon for some free time before continuing to our hotel.

DAY 11
Return to USA

Today we bid Portugal farewell and board our flights home, carrying with us memories that will last a lifetime.
