Passion Play Pilgrimage to Oberammergau
Moderate – High
We are pleased to announce our 2022 Passion Play pilgrimage. On our pilgrimage we will visit Lourdes, Avignon, Turin, Lucerne and Munich.
One of the highlights of the pilgrimage will be the Oberammergau Passion Play. In 1633, in the quaint Bavarian town of Oberammergau, gripped by war, poverty and plague, the villagers of Oberammergau vowed to put on a “passion play” every ten years if their village was spared. They survived, and performed the very first Oberammergau Passion Play in 1634. Ever since, their descendants have carried out this pledge. The play takes place every 10 years.
All participants, from actors playing the significant speaking parts such as Jesus, Mary or Judas, through members of the choir, orchestra members, firemen, and ushers must have been born in Oberammergau or have been living there for at least 20 years. Over 2,000 participants bring the story of Jesus of Nazareth to the ears and eyes of the audience in a five hour presentation of this impressive presentation.
We hope you will join us.
