Pilgrimage Overview

Dear Friends in Christ,

Please join me and explore Machu Picchu, built in the 15th Century, and abandoned when the Inca Empire was conquered by the Spaniards in the 16th Century.  To this day, many of Machu Picchu’s mysteries remain unresolved, including the exact role it may have played in the Incas’ sophisticated understanding of astronomy and domestication of wild plant species.

Then we will travel to Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, which now has a number of Catholic Churches.  In Lima we will pray at the burial sites of Saint Rose of Lima and San Martin de Porres.  And so much more!  I’m anticipating this pilgrimage to fill quickly, so don’t delay!

Depart USA

Today we depart for our overnight flights to Lima with meals and beverages served aloft.

Arrive Lima

Upon arrival at Lima airport and after visa formalities we are greeted by our HLTC representative and continue to our hotel to check-in and for time to rest. Day is at leisure to walk down to the Plaza, or enjoy one of the nice nearby restaurants. Overnight: Lima (Breakfast)

Our pilgrimage begins with a city tour of Lima, the oldest capital in South America, with a superb combination of Spanish Colonial and 19th century European architecture. Visit the Plaza de Armas of Lima, passing by the Lima Cathedral, the Government Palace, and Municipal Palace. Continuing to visit the Dominican Convent and pray at the tombs of St. Rose of Lima and St. Martin de Porres. This afternoon, we celebrate mass at the Dominican Convent before returning to our hotel. Overnight: Lima (Breakfast)

We begin the day by traveling to the top of Cerro San Cristobal for a beautiful view of Lima. We then visit the Franciscan Convent including the basement of bones and Señor de los Milagros en el Santuario de Las Nazarenas de Lima. We enjoy a tour of the Lima Cathedral and the Archbishop Residence before an afternoon at leisure to explore Lima on our own. Overnight: Lima (Breakfast)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport and take a flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival, you are transferred to your hotel for check-in. In the afternoon, join the orientation tour of Cusco, the old capital of the Inca Empire. You will start your tour with a visit to the Coricancha, also known as the “Temple of the Sun” the construction of which was ordered by famous Inca Emperor Pachacutec (1438-1471). Temple was used as base for the construction of the Santo Domingo Convent upon the arrival of the Spaniards. Mass celebration will be held at the Santo Domingo Church (Convent). The rest of the evening at leisure. Overnight: Cuzco (Breakfast, Dinner)

This morning after breakfast we return to Plaza de Armas de Cusco and continue to the Cuzco Cathedral, the most important building on the Main Square and the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cusco. We then continue to La Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus, a historic Jesuit Church in Cusco that was built on an Incan Palace. It is one of the best examples of Spanish Baroque architecture in Peru. The architecture of this building exerted a great influence on the development of many Baroque architectures in the South Andes. Its construction began in 1576, but it was badly damaged in an earthquake in 1650. The rebuilt church was completed in 1668. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight: Cuzco (Breakfast, Dinner)

After breakfast we drive to the Sacred Valley of Incas. Visit a popular religious shrine (Señor de Huanca) and celebrate Mass there. We will visit the historical town of Pisac with its colorful market. Lunch in Pisac. We then head to Ollanta station to take a train to Aguas Calientes which is the gateway city to Machu Picchu. Overnight: Machu Picchu (Breakfast, Dinner)

Machu Picchu

After lunch, we will return to the Aguas Calientes train station to board our train back to the Ollantaytambo. Overnight: Cuzco (Breakfast, Dinner)
