We will start out with our 3-day conference in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire before continuing on to the beautiful city of London where we will have the opportunity of visiting several famous religious sites. Arrival at Heathrow Airport to collect luggage and customs at which point you will be greeted by Holy Land Travel Center Representative and board our coach. Time permitting, we will stop for lunch before a midafternoon arrival at High Leigh Conference Center. Conference Registration and dinner before the first conference session begins. After there will be a Social in the on-site pub.
Breakfast at conference center. Catholic Mass. Session Four and General Assembly. Lunch. After conference activities are sojourned, we will take an afternoon coach to London for check-in to our hotel and an evening free for activities. Overnight: London (Breakfast)
After breakfast, we will depart from London and head to the birthplace of Christianity in England, the city of Canterbury where you have time to explore the ruins of Canterbury Abbey to learn about St. Anselm of Canterbury taking a stroll along the picturesque cobbled streets. We will tour the Roman City of Canterbury, the Cathedral of Canterbury, learn of Thomas á Becket, Christianity in England as Roman Catholicism and the Church of England. We will have time for a quick pint and some pub grub before departing for the Cliffs of Dover. The tour continues with a walk along the White Cliffs of Dover to witness the breath-taking views of the cliffs and look out over the English Channel. We will continue on to Margate for a cooling summer walk on the beach. Afterwards, we will return to London for an evening free to eat and explore. Today we will depart on our excursion after breakfast first driving out to Stonehenge for a tour before continuing on to Downton Abbey’s Highclere Castle for a guided tour. Next, we will take our coach to Oxford home of St. John Cardinal Newman, the Inklings (Tolkien, C.S. Lewis) and the famous Eagle and Child Pub where they met. We will briefly visit Blackfriars Hall, where Bede Jarret, and others contributed to the English Catholic revival. It is now the house of the studies of the English Dominicans, where Timothy Radcliffe is assigned. We will have just enough time for a short trip to Blenheim Palace (Churchill’s childhood home) before our ride back to London. Evening Free. Overnight: London (Breakfast)
This morning, after breakfast you will depart for a full day excursion to Cambridge and Walsingham. In Cambridge, you will visit Kings College, founded by King Henry VI in 1441. The college chapel is noteworthy for being the greatest example of Gothic architecture, and their chapel’s choir is world renown. We will also visit the Catholic Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs. We will then travel to Ely with its historic Anglo-Saxon Abby and majestic Cathedral which is also site of the Cromwell Reforms and English Protestantism. Next, we will continue on to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, which was established in 1061. According to the text of the Pynson Ballad, after much prayer, Our Lady led Richeldis de Faverches to Nazareth and saw the house where the Annunciation occurred. Faverches felt Our Lady’s call to replicate the house in the town of Walsingham. You will continue on to Norwich to visit the anchor of Dame Julian of Norwich and grab a quick bite. Your day will culminate as you board the bus and head back to London for dinner and overnight at your hotel. Overnight: London (Breakfast)
Today we will visit St James Palace, which has been the setting for some of the most important events in Royal history, having been a residence of Kings and Queens of England for over 300 years until the reign of Queen Victoria. We will continue on to Buckingham Palace, the homestead of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Parliament, Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. We will go by boat along the Thames passing London Eye, Festival Hall, National Theatre, and Shakespeare Globe, to the Tower of London. Walk from Tower of London to St. Paul’s Cathedral (approx. 30 min) then stop off at Blackfriars Pub before we part.
