Our full day tour includes a guided tour of the four major Basilicas, including St. Peter’s Basilica, St. John of Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major. We also have a three-hour guided tour of the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, and a visit to the Holy Stairs. Overnight: Rome (B)
Today we will take a tour of the Coliseum and Trevi Fountain in the morning before we enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to explore Rome before we transfer to the port to embark on our cruise. Overnight: Norwegian Star (B, D)
First, we head to Monaco and Monte Carlo. By motor coach, you will drive along the famous Formula 1 track. You will visit the Monte Carlo casino and can enjoy an optional walk around the Japanese Garden. There will also be some free time during which you can see the changing of the guard in front of the palace of the Prince, take pictures, or buy souvenirs. Next, we head to Eze. Take a stroll through the old town with your guide. This old village is huddled around a substantial medieval fortress, with rocks and houses of similar hues blending into each other. Afterwards, your guide will take you to the Fragonard perfume factory near the town of Eze. Your guide will then take you to Cannes. We drive along the world-famous Boulevard de la Croisette. The guide will tell you the fascinating story of Cannes and the Lerins Islands which are located offshore. Since 1834, a whole host of famous personalities have helped to establish the city’s reputation. In the past, the aristocracy would spend the winter here. There will also be some free time during which you can see the Film Festival Palace, take pictures of the famous red road or buy souvenirs. The last stop of your trip is the top of Cannes hill near one of the oldest churches, Notre-Dame-de l’ Esperance de Cannes where you will be able to take a memorable photo with the view of the entire bay of Cannes. This morning we discover the wonders of Florence, ‘City of Art.’ We visit the Academy of Fine Arts to view Renaissance masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s ‘David.’ We explore the wonderful Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), the Baptistry, Piazza della Signoria, and Santa Croce, housing Michelangelo’s tomb. Enjoy a very scenic and relaxing excursion, experiencing Italy’s coastline by motor coach and spending time in the beautiful villages of Sorrento and Amalfi. You’ll be driven along a coastal road, winding along breathtaking curves, before arriving in Sorrento perched high above the Bay of Naples. Once you’ve been given a brief orientation of the city and your meeting point and time, enjoy some free time to explore the flower filled main street and the Corso Italia or admire the high-quality handicrafts for which Sorrento is famous. Stop for lunch in Sorrento before you board your motor coach for a drive along the coastline to Amalfi. You’ll see spectacular views of sparkling blue sea, citrus orchards, olive groves and fishing villages nestled in secluded bays en route to one of the most picturesque villages on the Amalfi Coast. Here you’ll also have time to explore on your own. If time permits, you’ll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store before returning to your ship. Overnight: Norwegian Star (B, D)
This morning after departing from the pier we will take a short panoramic tour of Messina taking time to visit the glorious Cathedral of Messina. We will then continue along the coast to the South where we will approach Taormina, an ancient city that rises almost perpendicularly from the sea. It’s a beautiful setting with an alluring medieval character. After visiting the Arabian-influence Palazzo Corvaja and the ruins of a 2nd-century Greeks Theatre we will enjoy free time to wander the beautiful streets. Overnight Norwegian Star Cruise Ship (B, D)
Experience Corfu’s most enchanting landmarks, colorful villages and breathtaking views of the island on this delightful tour. After an approximate 30-minute drive, you’ll first stop at the beautiful spot of Paleokastritsa that offers splendid views of the area’s multiple bays. It’s said that Odysseus met Nausica after he washed ashore at one of these bays. Here you’ll visit the Monastery of the Virgin and its small museum. Your tour will continue towards the village of Lakones where you can look down on the Paleokastritsa and take memorable pictures. We head to the Old Town of Corfu, you’ll have the chance to admire from the comfort of your motor coach, the architecture of the beautiful mansions, the Byzantine churches, the old fortress, the Palaces of St. Michael and St. George and the lively Esplanade Square, before your return to the pier. Visit the archaeological site of Olympia and spend time in the village of Olympia. The site was a sanctuary even before the stadium was built and the games took place in 776 B.C. Today, only parts of the temple remain at the museum and only ruins remain at the site. The Temple of Zeus no longer exists and its traces have disappeared through the ages. The Temple of Hera, Prytaneion, and Philippeion were monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous stadium, with a capacity of 45,000 spectators, is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage. Stand at the starting line and imagine the voices of thousands of spectators seated on the stone bleachers. After tendering to the port of Athinios, you’ll drive to Pyrgos village, one of the oldest settlements and the highest village on the island. Admire the Venetian fortress crowned by several churches and from the highest point of the island the views out over the caldera are majestic. Head to the picturesque, Village of Oia for more magnificent views of the caldera. With its cobblestone streets and beautiful old homes perched on the cliffside, you’ll appreciate why the traditional Cycladic architecture is so appealing and a perfect complement to the natural beauty of the area. Here you will have Mass before traveling down to the ancient city where you can walk the marble roads rutted by wheels of countless chariots and pass the ruins of architectural masterpieces. It is here that St. Paul preached to the Ephesians, and where he was arrested and cast out of the city. This morning we head to the Sultanahmet district. This World Heritage-listed district is crammed with historic buildings and enough magical atmospheres to keep you enthralled for days. Full day visits to the Topkapi Palace; overlooking the Sea of Marmara and containing numerous chambers, courtyards and royal treasures, the Sultan Ahmed (Blue) Mosque with its six minarets and thousands of blue tiles, the Basilica of St. Sofia (Church of the Sacred Wisdom,) now a museum, converted to a mosque from a Christian basilica after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for the monasteries which are built on pillars of rock and seem to float in the air. As you drive up after the last village look at the caves of hermits presents and past in the rock pillars. Important Visitors are asked to dress appropriately with arms and legs covered. Today we will be visiting and exploring the city of Athens (Acts 17 16-34). Visit the Acropolis with Parthenon the greatest monument of antiquity, dedicated to the goddess Athena, from here one can see Aeropagus (areios Pagoes = Hill of Area) visited by Pope John Paul II, same hill where St. Paul gave his famous sermon of “Unknown God”.
