Itinerary

Itinerary

DAY 1
Depart USA

Today we depart on our transatlantic flights to Madrid. We enjoy inflight movies and meals aloft.

DAY 2
Arrive Madrid

Upon arrival in Madrid, we are greeted by our representative and immediately begin our pilgrimage with a panoramic city tour. Transfer to hotel for dinner and overnight. Overnight: Madrid (Dinner)

DAY 3
Toledo / Madrid Rome

Following breakfast, we will leave Madrid for the Imperial City of Toledo, where Saint John of the Cross was imprisoned by the Inquisition in a monastery just below the Muslim Alcazar and later nursed back to health by St. Teresa. The city, surrounded by walls, hides great treasures such as its awesome Cathedral, the Santa María La Blanca Synagogue which also served as a Catholic church, the superb Church of San Juan de los Reyes, and the Church of Santo Tomé, with its famous el Greco masterpiece, where we will celebrate Mass. Return to our hotel for dinner and overnight. Overnight: Madrid (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 4
Zaragoza

Morning departure to Zaragoza to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Pillar. According to ancient local tradition, soon after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, Saint James was preaching the Gospel in Spain, but was disheartened because of the failure of his mission. Tradition holds that on 2nd January 40 AD, while he was deep in prayer by the banks of the Ebro, the Mother of God appeared to him and gave him a small wooden statue of herself and a column of jasper and instructed him to build a church in her honor: “This place is to be my house, and this image and column shall be the title and altar of the temple that you shall build.” About a year after the apparition James is believed to have arranged to build a small chapel in Mary’s honor, the first church ever dedicated to the honor of the Virgin Mary. After James returned to Jerusalem, he was executed by Herod Agrippa in about 44 AD, the first apostle to be martyred for his faith. Several of his disciples took his body and returned it for final burial in Spain. This first chapel was eventually destroyed with various other Christian shrines, but the statue and the pillar stayed intact under the protection of the people of Zaragoza. Overnight: Zaragoza (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 5
Barcelona

Today we depart for Barcelona, enjoying the scenery of Southern Spain as we make our way into this enchanting city. We will then journey towards the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, located at the summit of Mount Tibidabo. We continue to explore Las Ramblas before checking in to our hotel for dinner and overnight. Overnight: Barcelona (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 6
Barcelona

After breakfast we continue to Montserrat, home to the Benedictine monastery dramatically set in the Montserrat mountain range. Pilgrims from around the world flock to this monastery to view its magnificent architecture in such a striking setting. This shrine has attracted pilgrims for over 700 years, much as it did Ignatius of Loyola in March of 1522. We pause here to visit the Black Madonna of Montserrat, probably Spain’s most fervent devotion to the Blessed Mother. We will spend the afternoon in Park Guell before we continue to our hotel for dinner and overnight. Overnight: Barcelona (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 7
Barcelona

This morning we head to the most famous Holy family church, La Sagrada Familia. La Sagrada Familia is an unfinished Catholic basilica in Barcelona designed by the celebrated Art Nouveau architect Antoni Gaudi. We enjoy a full guided tour of the Basilica before we continue to our cruise ship for embarkation. Overnight: Cruise Ship (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 8
Cruise

Today we take a short, guided tour around the historical town of Ajaccio and the old stomping grounds of Napoleon before we have some free time to ourselves to enjoy the beaches, stroll through the French town and enjoy some lunch either back on the boat or around town before returning to the ship for dinner and overnight. Overnight: Cruise Ship (Breakfast, Lunch*, Dinner)

DAY 9
Cruise

Today we begin our day by visiting the Basilica of St. Paul Outisde the Walls, which houses the remains of St. Paul under its main altar. Continue on with a guided tour of two more of the Major Basilicas, including St. John of Lateran, which was the residence of the popes prior to returning to Rome; and St. Mary Major, one of the oldest shrines dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, which contains a relic from the manger of the infant Jesus. We will also get the chance to see the highlights of Rome including the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain in the Piazza de Trevi. Time permitting, we will make a stop at St. Peter’s Square for some free time before heading back to the cruise ship. Overnight: Cruise Ship (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 10
Cruise

Enjoy a very scenic and relaxing excursion, experiencing Italy’s coastline by motor coach and spending time in the beautiful villages of Sorrento and Amalfi. You’ll be driven along a coastal road, winding along breathtaking curves, before arriving in Sorrento perched high above the Bay of Naples. Once you’ve been given a brief orientation of the city and your meeting point and time, enjoy some free time to explore the flower filled main street and the Corso Italia or admire the high-quality handicrafts for which Sorrento is famous. Stop for lunch in Sorrento before you board your motor coach for a drive along the coastline to Amalfi. You’ll see spectacular views of sparkling blue sea, citrus orchards, olive groves and fishing villages nestled in secluded bays en route to one of the most picturesque villages on the Amalfi Coast. Here you’ll also have time to explore on your own. If time permits, you’ll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store before returning to your ship. Overnight: Cruise Ship (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 11
Cruise

This morning we discover the wonders of Florence, ‘City of Art.’ We visit the Academy of Fine Arts to view Renaissance masterpieces, including Michelangelo’s ‘David.’ We explore the wonderful Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), the Baptistry, Piazza della Signoria, and Santa Croce, housing Michelangelo’s tomb. On the way back, we visit the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, known worldwide for its nearly four-degree lean, the result of an unstable foundation. Overnight: Cruise Ship (Breakfast, Dinner)

DAY 12
Cruise

First, we head to Monaco and Monte Carlo. By motor coach, you will drive along the famous Formula 1 track. You will visit the Monte Carlo casino and can enjoy an optional walk around the Japanese Garden. There will also be some free time during which you can see the changing of the guard in front of the palace of the Prince, take pictures, or buy souvenirs. Next, we head to Eze. Take a stroll through the old town with your guide. This old village is huddled around a substantial medieval fortress, with rocks and houses of similar hues blending into each other. Afterwards, your guide will take you to the Fragonard perfume factory near the town of Eze. Your guide will then take you to Cannes. We drive along the world-famous Boulevard de la Croisette. The guide will tell you the fascinating story of Cannes and the Lerins Islands which are located offshore. Since 1834, a whole host of famous personalities have helped to establish the city’s reputation. In the past, the aristocracy would spend the winter here. There will also be some free time during which you can see the Film Festival Palace, take pictures of the famous red road or buy souvenirs. The last stop of your trip is the top of Cannes hill near one of the oldest churches, Notre-Dame-de l’ Esperance de Cannes where you will be able to take a memorable photo with the view of the entire bay of Cannes.
